DENTON — The North Texas men's basketball team beat Old Dominion at the Super Pit Saturday night 69-56 behind another hot shooting performance.
The Mean Green (13-4, 6-1 C-USA) who have now won five in a row and 11 of their last 12 shot 75 percent from the field in the first half to take a commanding 19-point lead at halftime, which carried them through rough patches in the second half. UNT was led Saturday by Thomas Bell who finished with 17 points and 10 rebounds in the win. It is his third double-double of the year.
"We moved the ball really well in the first half," said head coach Grant McCasland. "We're figuring out how to win in conference and the resolve we need to be successful."
UNT made 15 of its first 20 shot attempts and were six of nine from deep. It came two days after the Mean Green made 11 3-pointers on Thursday in a 65-51 win over Charlotte. On the defensive end they held ODU (7-11, 2-3 C-USA) to sub 40 percent shooting and limited the tough Monarchs to just three first half offensive rebounds and zero second chance points through the first half.
"They're a really physical team and tough team," said Bell. "They crash the glass really hard and bully you in the paint but we kept them off the glass really well in the first half."
North Texas led 40-21 at the half.
The Monarchs though wouldn't go away.
Less than three minutes into the second half, Old Dominion had cut UNT's 19-point lead to just 11 points. North Texas had four turnovers in the first five minutes of the second half. They had just three turnovers in the whole first half. The Monarchs cut the deficit to seven points with 10 minutes remaining in the game but that's as close as they would get as UNT went on a 9-0 run fueled by six tough baskets around the rim by Bell and Ousmane.
"With some lineup changes we had to find our footing but give them credit they kept coming at us," Bell said. "But we stuck together and played as a unit and finished strong."
Sophomore guard Rubin Jones finished Saturday with a career-high 16 points on 4-of-6 shooting. Jones made three 3-pointers in the win, which tied a season-high for the Houston native.
With the win North Texas has now won three in a row over Old Dominion and improves to 6-1 in conference, which ties them for first place in the league with Louisiana Tech and UAB. The Mean Green are on the road next week as they travel to Southern Miss on Thursday and then have a showdown with the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs Saturday. UNT is 3-0 in road games this year and since moving to the DI ranks in 1957 has never started a season 4-0 on the road.
