DENTON - The UNT swimming and diving team will get a good gauge of where it stands in its first year in The American when the Mean Green head to Houston this week to take on a few of the teams they will see at the conference championship at the Phill Hansel Invite, which serves as a "midseason" championship meet, with a championship schedule and meet settings. It will also be the final competition for the Mean Green of the year as they will return to action in January.
UNT will be joined in Houston by the host Cougars, Tulane, Air Force, New Mexico and Rice and will be looking to ride a wave of momentum its picked up with three straight wins in the pool - over New Mexico, UIW and Little Rock. Competition will begin Thursday with the 200 free relay, 500 freestyle, 200 IM, 50 freestyle, 400 medley relay and 1-meter springboard and each of the three days of competition (Thursday-Saturday) will feature preliminary heats in the morning and finals in the evening, beginning at 6 p.m., Thursday and Friday, and Saturday's finals will begin at 4 p.m.
"This week will be a test and a rehearsal for our team as we take on the Phill Hansel Invitational," UNT head coach Brittany Roth said. "It's our first opportunity this season to put together a championship meet format and learn how to perform in prelims to get in a great finals position. We will get to compete with some of the other American programs, so this will be a great environment for the team to learn. We've really hit our stride in the last two months in training, and I know the team is ready to see their work from this semester step forward and be showcased."
