UNT Takes On UMass In Hall of Fame Classic

SPRINGFIELD, Massachusetts — The North Texas men's basketball team will face UMass Saturday afternoon in the 2022 Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame Classic from the MassMutual Center, in Springfield, MA.
The game, which will be played just blocks from Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, will be streamed on ESPN+ and the Mean Green Sports Network, presented by Learfield on the Varsity Network App. Tipoff to Saturday's contest is scheduled for 2 p.m. CT.
UNT (8-2) and the Minutemen (8-2) faced off in last season's Hall of Fame Classic, which was played in Dickies Arena in Fort Worth. The Mean Green defeated UMass in last year's matchup, 66-57. North Texas was led by Rubin Jones and Abou Ousmane who each scored 13 points in the 11-point win.
This season, though, UMass, is now led by veteran head coach Frank Martin who is in his first season as its head coach. Martin most recently spent 10 seasons as South Carolina's head coach where in 2017 he led the Gamecocks to their first Final Four. Prior to South Carolina, Martin was the head coach at Kansas State for five seasons where he led the Wildcats to four NCAA Tournaments, including the Elite Eight in 2010. During that 2010 NCAA Tournament he beat UNT in the first round, 82-62.
North Texas heads into Saturday's game riding a three-game winning streak and most recently defeated Grand Canyon, 60-58, in Phoenix on Dec. 10. Saturday's game will be North Texas' final non-conference game of the year before they begin league play on Dec. 22 at UTSA.
