SPRINGFIELD, Massachusetts — The North Texas men's basketball team won its fourth straight game with a 62-44 victory over UMass at the MassMutal Center Saturday night in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame Classic.
UNT (9-2) trailed at the half, 26-22, but held the Minutemen (8-3) to 5-of-26 (19.2 percent) shooting in the second half and finished the game on a 12-0 run over the final four minutes of the game to pull away with the victory.
Overall in the second half, North Texas outscored UMass 40-18.
The Mean Green's Tylor Perry was named the Hall of Fame Classic's Most Valuable Player as he finished with a game-high 23 points.
"Give UMass credit," said head coach Grant McCasland. "Their defense and athleticism made it real tough on us in the first half. They have one of the best 3-point defenses in the country. In the second half we really emphasized getting paint touches and getting to the basket. And then defensively, we are just a gritty team that was locked in on that end in the second half."
The Mean Green held UMass Saturday to 0-of-10 shooting from deep over the 40 minutes. It's the first time they've held a team without a 3-pointer since Humboldt State was held 0-of-18 from 3-point range versus UNT on Nov. 9, 2018.
Three of North Texas' four straight wins have come away from the Super Pit. In its last three UNT trailed at the half and made a second-half comeback. Perry is averaging 15.3 points per second half over the last three games. He was also named the MVP of the 2022 Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame Jerry Colangelo Classic on Dec. 10 versus Grand Canyon.
Kai Huntsberry added 14 points Saturday and Abou Ousmane had eight points to go along with seven rebounds. Sophomore Matthew Stone scored all seven of his points after the final media timeout.
UNT remains on the road as they travel to UTSA on Dec. 22 to open conference play. The game is scheduled to tip off at 7 p.m. CT and will be streamed on ESPN+ and the Mean Green Sports Network.
