BOCA RATON, Florida — The North Texas men's basketball team extended its win streak to 11 in a row with a gritty 54-51 victory at Florida Atlantic Thursday night.
The win, which featured multiple stoppages due to bloody noses and cuts keeps the Mean Green (19-4, 12-1 C-USA) alone atop the league standings and keeps them undefeated in a road games this season at 7-0. FAU (15-11, 8-5 C-USA) had won 10 straight at home headed into Saturday. UNT has now won 17 of their last 18 marking the first time in program history they've accomplished that feat.
"A really grimy and gritty win for our team," said head coach Grant McCasland. "An extremely physical win. It's the way we like it but give them credit they never backed down."
UNT had three score in double figures and was led by its senior Thomas Bell who scored 13 points and had 11 rebounds in the win. Bell also hit clutch free throws down the stretch to close out the road victory. He drew 11 fouls in the 35 minutes he played.
North Texas, which leads the nation in scoring defense held the Owls to 25 points below their respective scoring average. The Mean Green held the FAU starters to 8-of-37 shooting (21 percent).
"I'm really proud of this team," McCasland said. "Toughest team wins and we were able to fight to get this one.
UNT stays on the road as they travel to UAB and face the Blazer Saturday in Birmingham, Alabama. The game is scheduled to tip-off at 3 p.m. CT and will be broadcast on Stadium and the Mean Green Sports Network
