DALLAS - Sophomore Diego Prone made his spring debut earlier this week in the Louisiana Classics, and the Buenos Aires native put on a show in the process.
Prone fired a career-low round of 65 - the lowest for a Mean Green player since November 2019 - and book-ended that with two 70s (his previous career-low) to finish the event at 11-under par in a tie for third place - his best collegiate finish. He led the team to a third-place finish at 20-under par and to key wins over No. 17 Ole Miss and No. 41 Little Rock.
That performance earned him Conference USA Golfer of the Week honors, the league announced on Wednesday. It's the first Golfer of the Week award in his career and the second for the Mean Green in as many tournaments following teammate and countryman Vicente Marzilio's award two weeks ago after the Coral Creek Club Invitational.
Prone was up against a field that featured six top-100 players. The only one to beat him was No. 2 Sam Bennett, who won the tournament for Texas A&M, with a new tournament record. Rankings of players he finished ahead of were: 42, 99, 100, 91 and 21. Prone's 16 total birdies were good for fourth in the field and he tied for second in Par-5 scoring.
"Diego is such a talented player and played some great golf this week against a solid field," UNT head coach Brad Stracke said. "Congratulations to Diego, this was well deserved."
The men will resume action March 21-22 at the All-American Intercollegiate in Houston.
