DALLAS - Vicente Marzilio went head-to-head with several nationally ranked golfers earlier this week at the Coral Creek Club Invitational in Placida, Florida, and he wasn't outdone by any of them.
The UNT sophomore led after two rounds and finished by tying for third in the event that featured six top-100 players - five of whom were ranked in the top-50 entering the week. Marzilio tied with No. 31 Nick Gabrelcik and beat the Nos. 48, 8, 49, 77 and 10 players in the country with his 5-under par showing after a 68-67-73-208.
The performance earned him Conference USA Golfer of the Week honors, the league announced on Wednesday. It's the second Golfer of the Week award in his career - the first coming after his first collegiate tournament last year.
Marzilio finished tied for third in the field in Par 3 scoring, tied for second in Par 4 scoring, tied for fifth in total birdies (10) and tied for third in total pars (39).
"It's well deserved and I'm very proud of Vicente," UNT head coach Brad Stracke said.
The men resume action March 14-15 at the Louisiana Classics in Lafayette, Louisiana.
