DENTON, TX - UNT softball will host UTEP Friday at Lovelace Stadium for its second home series of the season. The Mean Green (18-7) are coming off a conference win over Charlotte last weekend and sit at second in the standings with a 7-2 record in league play. UTEP (12-20) is fifth in the western division of the conference with a 2-7 league record.
HISTORY AGAINST OPPONENT
UNT holds a 18-7 record against UTEP all-time with the last game taking place in 2021. The Mean Green traveled to El Paso for a four-game series at Helen of Troy Softball Complex last year where they swept the Miners, including a pair of run-rule wins, both in five innings.
The series opener against the Miners was the first road win over UTEP since 2014 for the Mean Green as they won 9-1 in five innings. Maia Wark and Tuesday DerMargosian both hit the second home runs of their careers.
On day two of the weekend, UNT exploded for 15 runs on 25 hits in two games as the Mean Green run-ruled the Miners for the second time in as many days. Wark and DerMargosian homered again on Saturday for scores in consecutive days. Kalei Christensen also homered for the second time of the season.
In the final game of the weekend, Hope Trautwein picked up her 600th career strikeout, becoming the second player in program history to reach the milestone. Wark homered once again for her third home run in four games as UNT won 7-2 to complete the series sweep.
UNT's TOP PERFORMERS
Sophomore infielder Mikayla Smith has been on an offensive tear as of late. In the last five games, Smith leads the Mean Green offense in batting average (.385) and is tied for the most hits (5). Smith has recorded nine RBI, 12 runs, 13 hits, three doubles, one triple, one home run, 21 total bases, and ten walks on the season.
Sophomore outfielder Lexi Cobb leads the team in batting average (.414) and hits (24) on the season. Cobb returned to the lineup after a three-game absence and added three hits, three runs, and one RBI in the series against Charlotte.
After a scoring change, freshman RHP Skylar Savage (6-3) was credited with her first collegiate no-hitter on Friday in the series opener against Charlotte. It was the first no hitter for UNT since Hope Trautwein did it against Arkansas PB on April 11, 2021. Savage finished the day with four strikeouts and recorded the win to give UNT a 1-0 series lead. Savage has pitched four complete games on the season and also picked up her second save of the season against Charlotte in game two.
