DENTON — North Texas men's basketball Associate Head Coach Ross Hodge was awarded the 2022 Texas Division I Assistant Coach of the Year honor by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches on Tuesday.
Hodge, who this past season completed his fifth year at UNT, is the mastermind behind the Mean Green's defense that led the nation in fewest points allowed per game (55.7) and fueled their 2022 Conference USA championship and program-record 25-win season.
The 55.7 scoring defense was also a C-USA record.
Since Hodge arrived to Denton with head coach Grant McCasland in 2017, the Mean Green have posted a 104-58 overall record and a 55-31 record against conference opponents. Over the last three years against C-USA opponents in all competitions, the Mean Green have the most wins (44) and have the best winning percentage (.785). This year, UNT won a program-record 16 league games and went on a program-record 15-game winning streak between January and March.
UNT has won three straight Conference USA championships, a 2018 College Basketball Invitational championship, a NCAA Tournament game and a NIT game.
North Texas' 2021 NCAA Tournament 78-69 upset win over Purdue in the first round was the program's first-ever NCAA Tournament victory. Its 2022 NIT 67-63 victory over Texas State was the program's first as well.
At the conclusion of this past season, the Mean Green earned a No. 55 NET ranking, which tied last season's mark and is the program record.
Under Hodge's guidance, North Texas has earned 18 all-conference honors.
