DENTON, TX – North Texas men's basketball cruised to a 122-50 opening night win over Southwestern Christian Monday at The Super Pit, moving to 1-0 for the 14th consecutive season.
Drawing starts in their first games in Mean Green (1-0) uniforms, juniors Cash Chavis and Amar Amkou each provided valuable contributions on both sides of the ball. The former made his mark on the offensive end as both a scorer and facilitator, going for 17 points (6-9 FG, 3-5 3pt) and four assists while racking up a pair of steals. Meanwhile Amkou went for 16 points (6-10 FG, 2-4 3 pt) and nine rebounds, three of which were offensive boards. At the other end of the court, he came with a steal and tallied two blocks.
However, the biggest offensive night came from freshman Aeneas Alexander – scoring 22 points (6-11 FG, 2-3 3pt, 8-9 FT) off the bench in his first collegiate appearance. Through this he became the first UNT student-athlete to score 20+ off the bench since Brenan Lorient during the 2024-25 season and the first freshman North Texas student-athlete to score 20+ in their collegiate debut since at least the 2007-08 season.
Like Amkou, Alexander finished one rebound shy of a double-double but helped the lead what was a 61-27 advantage on the glass for the Mean Green. The dominant display on the boards rank seventh in team history in a single game and the second time UNT has eclipsed 60 rebounds this century (last done Dec. 28, 2007, vs. Texas A&M-International).
Those boards came if Southwestern Christian was able to get a shot off, as UNT generated 21 turnovers and 16 steals – lead by freshman Marcus Zelee's four steals. Eight of 12 student-athletes to enter the game came away with at least one steal and senior Cole Franklin, juniors Reece Robinson, Je'Shawn Stevenson and Chavis each tallying multiple steals.
Stevenson scored 15 points on the night and led the team with five assists. Franklin and Zelee rounded out UNT's double digit scoring efforts with 12 and 11 respectively.
Franklin, in addition to his aptitude for generating steals, also led the team with three blocks.
Up next, UNT remains in The Super Pit for a matchup with McNeese on Thursday at 4 PM. That game will be broadcast on ESPN+ as well as the Varsity Network for radio.
