DENTON, TX – Head Coach Daniyal Robinson's second campaign leading UNT tips off on Monday as the team opens the season against Southwestern Christian at 7:30 before hosting defending Southland Conference Champion, McNeese, on Thursday at 4 PM at The Super Pit.
Despite Monday's matchup being the first between the Mean Green and Eagles, UNT did face one of SCU's conference contemporaries in Science & Arts last year, which ended in a decisive 109-56 UNT win. In that game, junior Je'Shawn Stevenson tied for the team lead with 16 points followed by senior Cole Franklin and sophomore EJ Horton's 12 points.
Stevenson returns to the court as the American Conference Preseason Player of the Year. The Chicago native is the highest returning scorer in the league averaging 17.3 points per game last year and one of seven Mean Green student-athletes this century to average more than 17 points per game.
Should he replicate his performance, he would join former UNT standout Chris Davis as the only Mean Green with multiple seasons averaging over 17 points a game.
Fellow returnee Franklin is coming off one of his strongest games of the 2025-26 season where he scored 15 points against Tulsa on fix field goals and a season high three three-pointers while contributing four steals on the defensive end.
Looking forward to Thursday, McNeese's visit to the Super Pit is the first since 2017 when UNT walked away with an 85-47 victory. The matchup kicks off the first of consecutive NCAA Tournament opponents for the Mean Green and a string of three-consecutive that all played in the postseason last year.
Returning junior Reece Robinson will be looking to continue a stretch where he hit a three-pointer in each of the last three games last season. A 34% three-point shooter last season, R. Robinson has the highest returning clip of anybody on UNT and was equally effective inside the perimeter, shooting 50.3%, also the best returning clip.
Freshmen Aeneas Alexander, Marcus Zelee, and TJ Crumble will each be making their official collegiate debuts while sophomore Ousmane Ndour and junior Cash Chavis will be donning the Mean Green jersey for the first times.
Chavis comes to Denton from UT-Arlington where he started all 32 games for UTA and averaged 10.5 points per game. The guard closed the season with a 13.9 ppg average over his final seven games with the Mavericks, highlighted by 18-points against Tarleton State.
Both games will be streamed on ESPN+ and broadcast over radio on the Varsity Network.
