
UNT Softball Drops Heartbreaker to UTSA

RECAP:
North Texas (21-8, 10-3) struck first in the top of the second inning as Tayla Evans led off with a blast to center field to grab a 1-0 lead. Molly Rainey and Ashlyn Walker then reached base on consecutive walks before Mikayla Smith extended the lead to 2-0 with a single to left field. The Mean Green added one more run before the end of the inning as Cierra Simon brought Ashlyn Walker home on a fly out to center field to make it 3-0.
UTSA answered in the bottom of the third inning with three runs to even the game. Camryn Robillard started the scoring with an RBI double up the middle to score one run. Emily Dear then scored two more with another double up the middle to even the game at 3-3 before the end of the inning.
Kalei Christensen responded in the top of the fourth inning with a single to left center to knock in two more runs and retake the lead 5-3.
The Roadrunners (12-20, 5-5) then homered to left field to cut the Mean Green advantage to 5-4 in the bottom of the fourth inning.
In the top of the fifth inning, Walker tacked on one more run with a double to left field to bring Evans home for her second run of the game and stretch the lead to 6-4.
The Mean Green continued to work on offense and recorded another run in the top of the sixth on a sac fly to left field by Kailey Gamble to bring Lexi Cobb back to home plate. The sac fly gave Cobb her second run of the night and made it a 7-4 lead for North Texas.
The Roadrunners then tied it at 7-7 with a three-run home run to center field by Riley Grunberg before Marena Estell hit a walk-off home run to right field to win the game 8-7 for the Roadrunners in the bottom of the seventh.
Skylar Savage started the game for the Mean Green and pitched 2.1 innings while striking out three batters before Ashley Peters (8-4) took over in the third inning. The junior LHP was charged the loss and struck out nine batters in 4.0 innings.
Alexa Williams (3-4) recorded the win for UTSA and struck out two batters in 2.2 innings.
Evans finished 2-for-3 at the plate with two runs, one RBI, one HBP, and one home run.
Lauren Coerver, Riley Grunberg, and Marena Estell all homered for the Roadrunners.
