DENTON, TX – North Texas (35-14) will play in its first NCAA Regional against Nebraska (40-14) at Cowgirl Stadium Friday, May 20 at 5 p.m. CT. The Mean Green earned an automatic bid to Stillwater after winning its first Conference USA Tournament Championship in program history.
HISTORY AGAINST OPPONENT
UNT has only played Nebraska one time in program history. The only meeting between the two programs came back in the 2011 season at Lovelace Stadium in Denton, TX. Nebraska won 4-2 in that contest.
Neither team scored in the first two innings of the game before Nebraska scored four runs in the top of the third inning. North Texas then scored one in the fifth inning and trailed 4-1 heading into the seventh inning. The Mean Green loaded the bases with no outs but came up short as they fell 4-2.
UNT's TOP PERFORMERS
Sophomore Lexi Cobb was named to the All-Tournament team as she led the Mean Green in multiple categories. Cobb finished 8-for-10 with eight runs, two doubles, two home runs, and six RBI in three games. Cobb is leading North Texas with a batting average of .414, 58 hits, and 41 runs on the season.
Redshirt sophomore Molly Rainey won MVP for the conference tournament and was selected to the All-Tournament team as well. Rainey finished with a .667 batting average (6-for-9), five runs, two doubles, two home runs, and a team-leading eight RBI in three games. The Ada, Okla. product leads the team with 13 doubles and has recorded a .343 batting average with eight homers on the season.
Junior LHP Ashley Peters was the third selection for UNT on the All-Tournament team. In 12.0 innings, Peters finished with a 1.70 ERA and six strikeouts while holding WKU to one hit in the conference championship game. The junior left-handed pitcher went 2-0 on the weekend and pitched complete games in both of her appearances. Peters (19-6) has struck out 147 batters and owns a 2.47 ERA for the season.
