STILLWATER, OKLA. – North Texas picked up its first two NCAA postseason wins in program history Saturday at Cowgirl Stadium, as they defeated Fordham 5-3 and Nebraska 3-0. The Mean Green avenged their Friday afternoon loss by shutting out the Huskers to advance to the Regional Championship game on Sunday.
"We bounced back, which we've done really well all year," head coach Rodney DeLong said. "I've said all weekend this group is resilient. If you watched our dugout and our team you know they flew around today, played hard and stayed in it. I'm really proud of our performance overall as a team and then obviously Skylar (Savage) was really good tonight. Outstanding performance by her and we're proud of her growth. She's come a long way in the two years we've known her."
North Texas started the day with their first NCAA postseason win in program history with a 5-3 win over Fordham (30-22).
Kalei Christensen started the game with her first career grand slam in the bottom of the first inning to give UNT a 4-0 lead. The homer gave Christensen 48 RBI on the season, good for third-most in a season in program history.
Saleen Donohoe then extended the team home run record to 71 with a solo blast to left field to make it 5-0.
Ashley Peters (20-7) started the game and picked up her 20th win on the season, good for third-most in program history. Skylar Savage relieved her in the seventh inning to pick up her seventh save and tie the record for most saves in a single season in UNT history.
The win set up a rematch with Nebraska on Saturday evening. The Mean Green (36-15) struck first in the second game of the day when Lexi Cobb doubled to left field in the third inning. North Texas extended the lead to 2-0 when Cobb crossed home on a Husker error.
Mikayla Smith added one more run in the fourth inning on another RBI double to make it 3-0.
Savage (15-7) pitched a three-hit shutout gem to pick up the win against Nebraska (41-16). The freshman finished with seven strikeouts, one short of her career high.
UNT will play Oklahoma State in the Regional Championship, Sunday, May 22 at 3 PM CT. The game will be televised on ESPN+.
