Marzilio, Prone Set To Compete In U.S. Amateur

PARAMUS, N.J. - The UNT men's golf program will be well represented on Monday when incoming juniors Vicente Marzilio and Diego Prone will tee off among 310 other competitors at the U.S. Amateur - the most prestigious, historic amateur event in golf.
The tournament will be contested on two separate courses - Arcola Country Club and The Ridgewood Country Club, with Prone set to tee off the first round of stroke play on Monday at Arcola at 6:31 a.m., and Marzilio at 7:55 a.m., at The Ridgewood. The champion receives exemption into the next 10 U.S. Amateurs, next year's U.S. Open, next year's The Open Championship (if still an amateur) and a likely exemption to next year's Masters (if still an amateur).
Marzilio, who also played in the event last year, has led the team in scoring average the last two seasons and was the Conference USA individual champion as a freshman. Last season, he posted a scoring average of 72.94 and earned a bid as an individual to the NCAA Regional in Norman, Oklahoma, where he tied for 34th. He carded six top-20 finishes on the season and had three top-10 showings. Prone had the second-best scoring average on the team with a 74.57 and had the best round of the year when he shot a 65 at the Louisiana Classics. He had three top-20 showings and led the team at the Conference USA Championship by tying for 13th. He had a career-best finish of T3 at the Louisiana Classics.
"This is a great opportunity for Vicente and Diego to showcase their games in the premier amateur championship in the world," UNT head coach Brad Stracke said.
The event will be televised live on Peacock and Golf Channel beginning Wednesday, with the match play Round of 64, and concluding with Sunday's championship match. On Monday and Tuesday, players will play two rounds of stroke play before the field is cut to 64 for match play, which begins Wednesday. Thursday will feature the Round of 32 and Round of 16 matches, before quarterfinal matches on Friday, semifinal matches on Saturday and Sunday's championship.
