UNIVERSITY PLACE, Wash. - Three members of the UNT women's golf team will begin play on Monday at the U.S. Women's Amateur, as senior Audrey Tan, junior Ellie Roth and incoming freshman Mason Lewis will make up a part of the 156-player field at the prestigious and historic event at Chambers Bay Golf Course.
North Texas joins Illinois, Mississippi State, Northwestern, Stanford, UCLA and USC as the only colleges with three players in the field.
"I am really proud and excited that Audrey, Ellie and Mason will be playing in the US Am next week," UNT head coach Michael Akers said. "It is a very big deal to have three players from the same team advance. This feat certainly speaks volumes for our program."Â
Tan is set to tee off first on Monday, as she'll set off from the first hole at 9:33 a.m., along with Ami Gianchandani and Ina Kim-Schaad. Roth is set to tee off at 2:44 p.m., from the 10th hole with Kelly Sim and Martha Leach, and Lewis goes off from No. 10 at 3:17 p.m., with Leia Chung and Fiona Xu.
Tan is one of the program's all-time greats and led the team last season to a second straight Conference USA Championship after posting a team-best stroke average of 72.30 and setting a single-season record for birdies. Roth had a strong debut year in Denton after transferring from Kansas, as she posted the second-best stroke average on the team with a 74.79. Lewis is a former Texas UIL state champion at the Class 5A level and last year was named the Texas Girls Coaches Association Class 5A-6A Golf Athlete of the Year.
The event will be televised on Golf Channel each day beginning Wednesday and concluding with Sunday's championship match. On Monday and Tuesday, players will play two rounds of stroke play before the field is cut to 64 for match play, which begins Wednesday. Thursday will feature two rounds of match play before quarterfinal matches on Friday, semifinal matches on Saturday and Sunday's championship.
"Chambers Bay is an amazing golf course and should be a great experience for the ladies," Akers said. "They plan to get extra reps in as the grass and conditions will certainly be different than Texas. The weather should also be different than DFW right now."
