DENTON — Taylor Tufts scored two goals and had an assist Thursday night to lead the North Texas women's soccer team to a 4-0 victory over Charlotte to begin conference play.
The Mean Green (5-3-1, 1-0-0 C-USA), who after Thursday extended their already NCAA DI record home conference match unbeaten streak to 65 in a row, flexed their offensive force by striking 21 shots against the 49ers (1-5-2, 0-1-0 C-USA) and scoring a pair of goals by the 27th minute.
"When we bring energy from the start we're very tough to beat," said head coach John Hedlund. "A solid team effort by everyone tonight and a great way to start conference."
The eight-time Conference USA champion Mean Green also got goals Thursday from freshman Grace Dennis and fifth-year senior Olivia Klein.
Dennis scored the first goal Thursday night, which came just seven minutes into the match. Tufts placed the ball into the box off of a corner kick and the defensive midfielder was there to knock it in. It's the Allen native's first collegiate goal.
The assist by Tufts is her league leading seventh of the year. She entered Thursday's contest tied for fifth in the nation in assists.
Tufts then scored UNT's second and third goals Thursday, which respectively were her second and third goals of the year.
Then in the 87th minute, Klein put a bow on the shutout victory with her league leading seventh goal of the season. Senior Jenna Sheely booted the ball down field to a streaking Klein who fought off the Charlotte defender and poked the ball in the goal from roughly 10 yards out.
The goal is Klein's 20th career goal, which means she is now the program's active career leader in goals scored.
UNT will remain at home and host Florida Atlantic Sunday at 1 p.m. CT. The match will be streamed on ESPN+.
