Mean Green Set For Annual Green vs. White

DENTON - The UNT divers will have the first taste of competitive action on Friday in the diving portion of the Green vs. White meet, while the swimmers will get a chance to outduel one another on Saturday following a dominant season-opening showing last week at the Sam Freas Invite, before both teams head to New Mexico next weekend for meets against New Mexico State and New Mexico.
Â
The swimmers started off the season last weekend at the Sam Freas Invite in Oklahoma and came home having set seven meet records and winning all but three races they entered. While a few experienced and decorated swimmers return this year along with several newcomers expected to contribute, the diving squad is full of experience with four back who qualified for NCAA Zones a year ago, including Conference USA Championship medalist Saylor Hawkins and Altaira Wallquist, who was the only diver last year to make the A-final in all three diving disciplines at the conference meet.
"This is our first chance to compete since February or March, really," diving coach Stephanie O'Callaghan said. "The team has been working hard the last few weeks; it's still so early in the season so we are still working a lot of basics but Green vs. White is a great first opportunity to shake off the cobwebs, get them fired up, have a little fun and get a competition under our belt before we travel to New Mexico. I'm so thrilled to have everyone back after such a strong season last year and (freshman) Gabi (Somoza) has been a great addition to the team, working hard day in and day out. They are all focused on what they need to do to raise their level of training to compete better and have a strong showing this first year in the new conference."
The diving portion of Green vs. White will begin at 1 p.m. on Friday at the PEB Natatorium, while the swimmers will begin on Saturday at 9 a.m., at the Pohl Recreation Center.
"I'm looking forward to this year's Green vs White Meet," head coach Brittany Roth said. "It will be exciting to have swimming and diving competing together this season. The swimmers have an opportunity to build off of last weekend's performance and it should be fun to watch them go head to head."Â
