Soccer Draws With Texas State

DENTON — The North Texas soccer team drew 2-2 with Texas State Sunday afternoon in Denton.
All four goals were scored in the match's final 18 minutes. UNT (4-1-1) twice held the lead in the final minutes but failed to hold on. The Bobcats (5-0-1), who came into Sunday's match undefeated, scored the deflating match-tying and eventual final goal in the 85th minute.
"It's a very tough result for us," said head coach John Hedlund. "Our offense gave us the lead twice in the second half, which normally our defense from there closes it out but it wasn't the case today. Give Texas State credit, their final goal with five minutes to play was a killer. We just weren't good enough today in those situations defensively, especially late in the game."
Madi Drenowatz scored the ice breaking goal in the 72nd minute off of through ball from Taylor Tufts that started the buildup and pass from freshman Kat Burnell. Once the first goal of the match was in, Texas State opened up and responded.
After being awarded a close foul call inside the Bobcats' attacking third, TXST equalized with a match-tying goal off the ensuing free kick in the 79th minute.
But it took less than a minute for UNT to respond as freshman Summer Brown finished an opportunity for her first career goal and to give the Mean Green the lead. However, that lead only stood for five minutes as Texas State tied the match up again off of another set piece, this time from a corner kick.
UNT is on the road next. They'll make the short trip on Thursday to Dallas to face No. 15 SMU. Along with their national ranking, the Mustangs rank No. 1 in the South Region as of Sunday. North Texas ranks No. 4 in the region. Thursday's match is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. CT and will be streamed on ESPN+.
