DALLAS — The North Texas women's soccer team lost 3-0 Thursday night at No. 16 SMU after giving up two very early goals.
The Mean Green (4-2-1) conceded the Mustangs' (4-0-2) first two goals in the first seven minutes of the match. The two early goals put UNT in a hole.
SMU added one more in the 82nd minute on a deep cross that turned into a shot.
North Texas freshman Kat Burnell nearly got her team on the board in the 87th minute but her shot hit the post.
"Disappointing," said head coach John Hedlund. "We conceded two early goals before we settled down and started to play. We had some nice opportunities to get back in it and cut the lead but their keeper either made a big save or we would hit the post. "I thought we played much better in the second half but their third goal late really looked like a cross that just went directly in. We needed a little luck tonight playing a nationally ranked team on their home field but nothing seemed to go are way. We will regroup and look forward to playing Texas Tech at home on Sunday."
In the second half, UNT created opportunities, had set piece chances near the 18-yard box and came close on a few shots but was unable to connect to narrow the gap.
Thursday's loss is the Mean Green's first shutout loss of the year.
UNT will be back in action Sunday at 1 p.m. CT when they host Texas Tech. The match will be streamed on ESPN+. It will be North Texas' final non-conference match of the year.
