Second Half Comeback Falls Short

DENTON — The North Texas women's soccer team's second half comeback versus Texas Tech Sunday afternoon fell short as they lost 3-2 at home, despite outshooting TTU 15-8 over the whole game.
After a difficult start to the game, UNT (4-3-1) outshot the Red Raiders (3-2-3) 10-1 in the second half and pulled within one goal after a 50th minute goal by Olivia Klein but was unable to complete the two-goal second half comeback.
"I clearly thought we won the second half and were the better team in the second half," said head coach John Hedlund. "Unfortunately, we started out slow and Texas Tech made us pay in the first half."
For the second straight match UNT conceded a goal before the 10th minute.
Sunday, Texas Tech, who in the preseason was picked to finish fourth in the Big 12, got on the board early with a goal in the seventh minute by Hannah Anderson. UNT responded, though, as freshman Summer Brown connected on her second goal of the year 11 minutes later to tie the score up.
TTU retook the lead in the 31st minute and then took a two-goal lead six minutes after that to lead 3-1 at the half.
A clear change in mentality had been made in the Mean Green halftime locker room as North Texas came out of the break firing and putting pressure on the Red Raiders' defense.
UNT nearly scored two goals less than two minutes into the second half.
On the third attempt, the Mean Green scored as Klein connected on her sixth goal of the season.
They continued to put their foot on the gas and had multiple goal-scoring opportunities as TTU hung on and struggled to counter but the match-tying goal never came for the Mean Green.
"Overall, I liked the team's fight today," Hedlund said. "The 3-2 loss stings but there is a reason Tech was picked to finish fourth in the stacked Big 12 conference. Nevertheless, we have a lot to build on from this game and it will definitely help us in conference play."
UNT begins conference play Thursday night with a home match versus Charlotte. The match will be streamed on ESPN+.
