DENTON — The North Texas women's soccer team begins its conference slate on Thursday with a home match versus Charlotte.
Thursday's match is scheduled to kickoff at 7 p.m. CT and will be streamed on ESPN+.
UNT (4-3-1) enters the match having not lost a home conference match since 2008 — a NCAA DI women's soccer record. Thursday will mark Charlotte's (1-4-2) first trip to Denton since 2016. In the three previous meetings with the 49ers at home, the Mean Green conceded zero goals.
A shutout victory Thursday for UNT is exactly how they hope to begin this season's conference schedule.
Scoring goals has not been the problem for the 16-time conference champion Mean Green. As of Wednesday, they feature the nation's No. 20 scoring offense, averaging nearly three goals per match. Its 23 total goals so far are the 10th-most in the nation.
A big contributor to the goal scoring has been the clinical finishers up top for the Mean Green as well as the build ups leading to the goals. UNT's 25 assists this season are the 10th-most in the nation. Midfielders Taylor Tufts, Grace Dennis and Avery Barron create countless opportunities for the goal scorers. Tufts' six assists through the first eight matches ranks fifth in the nation.
While North Texas leads the all-time series history against Charlotte, 7-1-0, the two schools have always had tightly contested battles. In 2017, North Texas won the Conference USA Tournament championship with a penalty kick shootout victory over Charlotte in the finals after no goals were scored in regulation and overtime.
