DENTON — The North Texas men's basketball team defeated UTSA, 63-59, Thursday night at the Super Pit.
Tylor Perry led all scorers with 21 points and made five 3-pointer in the win. The second-year UNT player moved up to No. 9 on the program's all-time 3-point list. He now has 138 career 3-pointers at UNT, which ties him with Deon Hunter (1986-89).
Junior Abou Ousmane added 13 points and 10 rebounds Thursday. It's his fourth double-double of the year.
"Give (UTSA) a lot of credit for making it tough," said head coach Grant McCasland. "Ultimately, we were able to get stops when it was close and we got the ball in the right guys' hands. And Tylor (Perry) really came through."
North Texas (17-5, 8-3) was a solid 50 percent from the floor (24-48) Thursday and it was Perry putting the game on ice late. He scored 10 of his 21 points in the final four minutes, including back-to-back 3-pointers when the Roadrunners (7-15, 1-10) had cut the deficit to one possession.
The Mean Green on Saturday never led by more than nine and 11 first-half turnovers really held them back from growing their lead to double-digits. But every time UTSA was knocking on the door of taking the lead, it was a North Texas steal, block or forced turnover that kept the experienced Roadrunners at bay.
UNT remains at home as they host UTEP Saturday at the Super Pit. The Miners were off Thursday. Saturday's game is scheduled to start at 5 p.m. CT and will be broadcast on ESPN+ and the Mean Green Sports Network, presented by Learfield on The Varsity Network app.
