DENTON - The UNT swimming and diving team closed out its home schedule and honored its 12 seniors on Saturday with a dual meet against Big 12 foe Iowa State and had several standout performances to use as momentum heading into The American Championships in just more than two weeks.
The Mean Green dropped the meet, 178-122, but head coach Brittany Roth took away plenty of positives and saw her team claim several victories.
"Today was an awesome day for our Mean Green swimmers and divers," Roth said. "Our team energy and our willingness to to be aggressive and hold nothing back at our last dual meet of the year was in full force. I'm so proud of the way our team showed up today to honor our senior class. This kind of meet is the momentum we are excited about as we turn our attention to The American Championships."
UNT claimed victories in the 200 medley relay (Diana Kolb, Tram Nguyen, Cierra Scully and Shaena McCloud), 100 and 200 backstroke (Kolb), 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly (McCloud), and perhaps the highlight of the day came when Noelle Marsh won the 100 freestyle in just her third meet back after missing months with a foot injury that required intense rehab and learning how to walk again.
In the diving pool, Olivia Dollar, Saylor Hawkins and Brigid Krbec took second, third and fourth, respectively, in the 3-meter springboard, while Krbec (personal best) and Hawkins took second and third, respectively, in the 1-meter. Krbec got her NCAA Zone cuts in both events, and Dollar got her NCAA Zone cut in the 3-meter with a personal best of 292.88. They will join Hawkins, who has already made her NCAA Zone cuts in both the 1-meter and 3-meter. Mackenzie Ferguson also got a PR in the 1-meter, and Gabi Somoza PRed in the 3-meter. Altaira Wallquist had season bests in both events.
"I'm super proud of the whole dive team today," diving coach Stephanie O'Callaghan said. "So many great performances and great moments. It's been a grueling month of practice and meets and they have worked so hard every step of the way. They finished out our regular season so well today - looking sharp and ready for conference. There were multiple season bests, lifetime bests and zone cuts today. Well deserved by all. It was a special day honoring a great group of seniors who are amazing people and leaders on this team."
After the meet, the program honored its 12 seniors: Hallie Connell, Olivia Dollar, London Farris, Makaia Goemans, June Harris, Hawkins, Jenny Holwell, Janelle Hummingbird, Krbec, Allison Scott, Scully and Wallquist.
The Mean Green will compete next Saturday at the SMU time trials before The American Championships begin in Dallas on Feb. 13.
