TAMPA, Florida — For only the second time this year the UNT soccer team was shutout as they fell 1-0 at South Florida Thursday night.
The Mean Green (8-3-1, 2-2-1) conceded the go-ahead goal in the 56th minute. The Bulls' Signe Markvardsen got around the North Texas back line and scored the eventual game-winning goal from the top of the box to the right corner of the net. It's just the 12th goal UNT has conceded all year.
"I think right from the beginning we went too direct looking for the big splash where we could have had a little more build up in our play," said head coach John Hedlund. "That being said they coughed the ball up a few times in their defensive third where we should have capitalized on their mistakes. It's unfortunate the goal they scored was on a deflection and we lost the game 1-0 but they play really well at home and were picked by everyone to win the the East division."
North Texas certainly had its chances to score Thursday at USF (7-5-1, 3-1-1). The Mean Green put five shots on target and had a couple 1-v-1s that the Bulls' keeper stuffed.
North Texas can quickly rebound as they take on Florida Atlantic Sunday in Boca Raton, Florida at noon CT. The match will be streamed on ESPN+.
