BOCA RATON, Florida — The UNT soccer team drew with Florida Atlantic on Sunday afternoon, 1-1, at the FAU soccer stadium.
The draw holds North Texas' overall record to 8-3-2 with three regular season matches in hand thus securing a winning season. The Mean Green, which are in their 29th season as a program have never had a losing season. John Hedlund has been the program's sole head coach since he founded it in 1995.
On Sunday, Mean Green senior Rachel Roebuck scored the go-ahead goal in the 62nd minute. It's the senior defensive midfielder's first goal of the season and second of her career. However, 10 minutes later the Owls scored the equalizer to level the match.
North Texas (8-3-2, 2-2-2) nearly regained the lead in the 77th minute when sophomore Summer Brown ripped a shot from outside the box but it struck the crossbar. The ball bounced directly down where Bailey Wesco was charging to clean it up but it was secured by the Florida Atlantic (6-5-4, 2-2-2) keeper.
"The late shot that Summer hit off the crossbar and Bailey rebounded I really thought that was the game winner," Hedlund said. "It's always a tough game with FAU especially at their place. Both programs have a strong championship pedigree coming from CUSA so a draw today doesn't surprise me. We've knocked out all of our road games so we're all excited to play our last three conference games at home where we've yet to lose."
UNT remains undefeated this season in matches where they score first.
