DENTON — For just the second time since 2008 the UNT soccer team lost a home conference match.
Missing a few key players to injury, the Mean Green (8-4-2, 2-3-2) lost 2-1 Thursday night versus Charlotte (7-5-4, 3-2-2). Both of the 49ers' goals were conceded in the second half.
After falling behind 1-0 in the 63rd minute, senior Devyn Flannery leveled the score just a few minutes later with a strike outside the box. It was her fifth goal of the season, which is a career-high for the senior from Frisco. However, Charlotte retook the lead for good in the 74th minute with a goal off a corner kick.
UNT's Bailey Wesco nearly tied the match in the 84th minute with a header, but a fingertip save by the 49ers' keeper pushed the shot out and over the net.
"Credit to Charlotte," Flannery said. "They kept their foot on the gas and really played strong in the second half. We'll quickly regroup. We know we can play a lot better and hopefully can grab some points here late."
Despite the result, North Texas got some help in the league standings Thursday night. UAB fell at Memphis and Florida Atlantic shared a point with UTSA. So following Thursday, the Mean Green are still in qualifying position for the conference tournament and with there being just five points separating the fourth place and ninth place teams a lot can change in the final week. The top eight teams in the league earn a bid to the conference tournament held in Florida.
UNT returns to the Mean Green Soccer stadium on Sunday with a 1 p.m. CT kickoff versus East Carolina. The Pirates defeated SMU in Dallas on Thursday, 1-0. North Texas concludes the regular season next Thursday with a home match versus the Mustangs. Both matches will be streamed on ESPN+.
