HOUSTON - The UNT divers competed at the Houston Diving Invite on Friday and Saturday against Houston, Idaho and Denver, and senior Saylor Hawkins led the way for the Mean Green while earning her second NCAA Zone cut in as many meets - this time with a school-record performance in the Platform.
Hawkins already had earned her Zone cut in the 1-meter springboard in last week's meet at UIW but will now be competing in the spring with a chance to go to the NCAA Championships in both the 1-meter and Platform. Hawkins' 231.45 was good for a fifth-place finish and broke her own previous school record mark. Senior Brigid Krbec and freshman Ashley Van Milligan rounded out the top-10 in the Platform by finishing ninth and 10th, respectively.
Hawkins and Krbec cracked the top-10 in the 1-meter competition, finishing sixth and 10th, respectively. In the 3-meter, Hawkins led the way by finishing fifth, Krbec finished eighth and Guidara finished 10th. In the team diving event, UNT's team of Hawkins, Krbec and Guidara finished third.
"I'm really proud of the divers this weekend," diving coach Stephanie O'Callaghan said. "It's a grueling weekend with four events over two days, but I think we learned a lot and had a lot of great performances starting with Saylor hitting her zone cut on tower with a really phenomenal performance. I'm looking forward to having a few weeks at home to train as we gear up for our November meets and work on adding a few more dives to their lists."
The Mean Green will be back in competition in another diving only meet on Nov. 1-2 at Texas. Fans can follow the program on Twitter and Instagram @MeanGreenSD.
