DALLAS — UNT soccer junior Bailey Wesco was voted American Athletic Conference Second Team All-Conference on Monday and freshman midfielder Mia Bernard was named to the league's all-rookie team.
The conference's 14 head coaches voted on the postseason awards.
Wesco, a forward from Midlothian, Texas, had been named to the league's preseason all-conference list prior to the start of the year. She finished the 2023 season with six goals and an assist. Half of her goals came against league opponents. Her 40 shot attempts on the year led North Texas.
The junior took over matches this season with her physicality and elite athleticism. She scored a brace on Oct. 5 versus Tulsa, with each goal being an equalizer. Also in that match, Wesco took a season-high seven shots — she did that twice this season — which was a third of her team's blistering 21 shot attempts against the Golden Hurricanes.
This is Wesco's first postseason all-conference award.
Freshman Mia Bernard from Heath, Texas, came on late in the year and showed flashes of brilliance with her quality of play. The attacking midfielder predominately came off the bench for the Mean Green but by the time conference play arrived she was another attacking weapon for one of the best offenses in the country. She finished the season with two goals and an assist.
Bernard is the seventh UNT freshman to be named to a league's all-freshman team since 2015.
