CHARLESTON, South Carolina — The UNT men's basketball team will play its first game of the Shriners Children's Charleston Classic against St. John's on Thursday. It will be the first time in program history the Mean Green have faced the Red Storm or their Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame head coach Rick Pitino.
Thursday's game is scheduled to start at 12:30 p.m. CT and will be broadcast on ESPNU and the Mean Green Sports Network, presented by Learfield. All the games of the four-day, three-game tournament will be played at the College of Charleston's TD Arena.
North Texas (2-0) enters Thursday's contest versus St. John's (1-1) having won its first two games of the season. The Mean Green defeated Northern Iowa 83-77 in their season opener last Tuesday and then defeated Omaha 75-64 on Saturday. Both games were played at the Super Pit.
On Monday UNT junior Aaron Scott was named the American Athletic Conference's Player of the Week after averaging 22,0 points per game and making seven of his 11 3-point attempts.
The Red Storm defeated Stony Brook 90-74 in the season opener and fell 89-73 to Michigan on Monday.
Thursday will also mark the first time since 2002 North Texas has played a game in the state of South Carolina. The Mean Green defeated Winthrop on the road, 65-56, on Dec. 7, 2002. It's the only other time in program history UNT has played a game in the state.
Depending on results, North Texas will either play LSU or Dayton on Friday. The game will either be at 10:30 a.m. CT or 1 p.m. CT.
The third game of the tournament will be on Sunday.
