INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The UNT swimming and diving team wrapped up its fall schedule in a storied venue at the House of Champions and will head into the break on a high note after a fourth-place showing out of 12 teams.
The Mean Green took 15 swimmers and their full complement of divers to the IUPUI Natatorium and came away with 915 points over the three-day event - just 20 points off second-place Milwaukee.
All 15 swimmers who competed ended up with a season-best time and there were several PRs, as well.
The team was led by standout efforts in the pool from junior Shaena McCloud and senior Diana Kolb and by senior Saylor Hawkins and freshman Sydney Guidara in the diving events.
McCloud and Kolb each made three individual A-finals, and each had one runner-up finish in those - McCloud in 100 butterfly and Kolb in the 200 backstroke. McCloud also finished third in the 100 freestyle and fourth in the 50 freestyle while anchoring the 200 freestyle relay, which was UNT's best relay finish. Kolb also finished fifth in the 100 backstroke and sixth in the 200 IM A-finals.
Junior Kailey Turner also had an A-final runner-up when she took second in the 200 butterfly, and she also brought home a win in the B-final of the 500 freestyle. Senior Paula Nunez took sixth in the 400 IM and won the 200 IM B-final, narrowly edging out teammate Laura Mazzotta, who won the B-final of the 100 breaststroke. The Mean Green scored one other B-final victory when junior Noelle Marsh won the 100 freestyle B-final.
In the diving events, Guidara finished eighth in the A-finals of both the platform and 1-meter springboard, while winning the B-final of the 3-meter springboard. Hawkins took sixth in the platform A-final and eighth in the 3-meter springboard A-final. Senior Brigid Krbec won the B-final in the platform.Â
"We had a great week in Indianapolis at the House of Champions," UNT head coach Brittany Roth said. "It was exciting for me, personally, to bring the Mean Green to a facility that has such a rich history in swimming, as well as a facility that was woven throughout my time in the sport. On the swimming side, we competed with 15 athletes, and those girls rallied together and were able to swim better than they have all semester. Every athlete had a season-best time in every event they competed, and that is an outstanding statistic and statement to the work they are continually putting in as we take on this year. The divers were strong for us throughout the meet, and it's incredible to see them continuing to push their completion lists with every opportunity. I'm really proud of our whole team and the way they fight for what they want."
The Mean Green will return to action on Jan. 6, when they host New Mexico and will honor their seniors in the final home meet of the year.
