DENTON - For a third straight game, the UNT men's basketball team won by its largest margin as they defeated Mississippi Valley State Saturday afternoon 79-48.
The Mean Green who are on a three-game winning streak have won all three games by an average margin of 28.6. Saturday they were led by Rubin Jones who scored 15 points and made three 3-pointers. Jones also dished out three assists and had no turnovers.
Over the last four games, Jones has had 16 assists and just two turnovers.
"He's been awesome," said head coach Ross Hodge of Jones. "There's a reason he's won so many games."
After Saturday's win Jones is now just eight wins shy of becoming the winningest player in Mean Green basketball history. He would surpass 2011 graduates Josh White, Tristan Thompson and Kendrick Hogans Jr. who won 86 games during their four seasons.Â
Also having a big game on Saturday was North Texas' bigs Robert Allen and Moulaye Sissoko who combined for 17 points and 20 rebounds. Both had season highs in rebounds.
"Moulaye (Sissoko) did a great job of getting us through a slow start (Saturday)," Hodge said. "And Robert (Allen) really helped us close the game out with his activity."
The Delta Devils (0-8) kept it close for much of the first half as they at one point made six straight shots in the first 20 minutes of the game. But deflections, rebounds and paint touches put the game away for UNT (5-2) who won its 12th straight home game with the victory.Â
North Texas has a quick turnaround as they travel to Boise State on Tuesday for its first true road game of the year. They'll take on the Broncos at 8 p.m. CT.
