No. 22 Softball Splits Results on Saturday

CELINA, Texas – No. 22 UNT softball won its seventh consecutive game over Sam Houston 8-2 before falling to No. 15 Kentucky 4-0 at the Tracy Beard College Classic on Saturday.

The win over Sam Houston marks the 500th win in modern program history which began in 2004.

Skylar Savage picked up her second win of the season over the Bearkats, finishing with 4.0 innings with five strikeouts. Mackenzie Childers spun the final three innings and set a new career high of six strikeouts.

Saleen Donohoe and Cierra Simon were each 2-3 with a home run and two RBI in the victory over Sam Houston.

HOW IT HAPPENED VS. SAM HOUSTON

Facing the first deficit of the season, the Mean Green fought back in the bottom of the first after a leadoff single from Lexi Cobb who would later score on an error to tie the game at 1-1.
In the home half of the second, Simon gave UNT the 2-1 lead with an RBI single.
Savage struck out five batters in the first three innings of work, including finishing the third with a pair to hold the North Texas advantage.
Donohoe hit her second home run in consecutive days with a two-run strike to dead center field.
The next at-bat, Simon followed with her own home run to put the Mean Green up 5-1.
North Texas would score another on a Rylee Nicholson RBI hit by pitch, pushing the advantage to 6-1 after four innings.
Molly Rainey deposited an RBI single to right field in the bottom of the fifth to widen the gap to 7-1.
Childers responded to the first home run allowed of her career with three consecutive strikeouts in the sixth to retain a 7-2 lead.
Kailey Gamble responded with her second home run of the season in the bottom of the sixth to restore the six-run lead for the Mean Green.
Childers retired the final three batters in order to close out the 8-2 win.

HOW IT HAPPENED VS. KENTUCKY

Peters and the North Texas defense shut down the top of the Wildcats order with three groundouts in the top of the first.
Kentucky tallied the first runs of the game with a home run in the third inning to put UNT behind 3-0.
The Mean Green put two runners on base in the fourth inning but were unable to break through and score any runs.
The Wildcats pushed another across in the top of the sixth for a 4-0 lead.
Donohoe drew a walk with two outs in the bottom of the seventh to summon Emma Grahmann for her season debut. The North Texas offense was unable to advance the runner, ending the game 4-0.

NOTES

The Mean Green extended its streak of consecutive games with a home run to seven before the loss to Kentucky. For the season, UNT has hit 12 home runs while only allowing three.
North Texas is tied for the best record at the Tracy Beard College Classic at 3-1 with Kentucky.
