Morais Named C-USA Women’s Tennis Player of the Week

Freshman from Lisbon, Portugal, becomes first UNT player to earn award this season
DALLAS (Feb. 22, 2023) – After a strong week on the court to keep her perfect singles record intact, UNT women's tennis player Matilde Morais was named the C-USA Athlete of the Week for the first time in her collegiate career.
Morais finished last week with a 2-0 record, including the clinching point for UNT in the 4-2 win over USF while playing at line two.
A freshman out of Lisbon, Portugal, Morais holds a perfect 9-0 record this season in singles play. In fact, Morais has yet to drop a set in those nine finished matches as she becomes the first UNT player since Jasmine Adams on March 23, 2022, to earn Athlete of the Week honors.
Against Sierra Berry of USF, Morais won a thriller in the first set 7-6 (7-3) and followed it up with a 6-4 victory in the second to sweep the match. It was the clincher for UNT and gave the Mean Green their second straight win over the Bulls.
In the next match against DBU, Morais was dominant as she won 6-1, 6-0 over Caroline Hudson to help UNT push their home winning streak to seven straight matches.
Additionally, Morais was strong in doubles play, playing exclusively at line one, as well as she teamed up with Adams against USF for a 6-4 win and Kexuan Zhou for a 6-3 victory over DBU.
The combination of Morais and Adams has now won eight straight doubles matches to improve their record to 8-1 at line one doubles this season.
Morais and the Mean Green return to action Sunday when they travel to Miami, Fla., to take on FIU at 11:00 AM for their first C-USA matchup of the season.
