
Gamble Powers Softball in Home Opener

DENTON – UNT softball opened its home schedule on Saturday with a 5-3 win over Northwestern State and dropping an 8-6 loss to Wichita State at the North Texas Invitational.
Kailey Gamble exploded for two home runs, opening the scoring for the Mean Green in each game with a three-run shot versus Wichita State and a solo home run in the win over Northwestern State.
Skylar Savage moved to 3-0 in her win over the Lady Demons with a final line of 6.1 innings pitched with three strikeouts and only two hits allowed. Ashley Peters claimed the loss against the Shockers with a 4.0 inning, three strikeout performance but was credited with the save in the second game, collecting the final out with the bases loaded.

HOW IT HAPPENED VS. WICHITA STATE
- The Shockers scored a run on an RBI triple in the top of the third to take a 1-0 lead.
- UNT threatened in the home half of the fourth inning, placing two runners on base but were unable to capitalize.
- Wichita State widened its lead with a six-run fifth for a 7-0 advantage.
- Mackenzie Childers entered with one out in the top of the fifth and ended the rally with a pair of quick outs. She came back in the sixth to retire the side in order.
- Molly Rainey led off the bottom of the sixth with a single followed by a Saleen Donohoe walk.
- Gamble tallied her third home run of the season on a 2-2 pitch, launching the ball over the left-center field wall to narrow the score to 7-3.
- Jodie Epperson and Mikayla Smith collected a pair of two-out singles, both later advancing into scoring position.
- Cierra Simon scored the pair with a two-RBI single and made the score 7-5.
- Lexi Cobb tallied a single to put runners on first and second.
- Rainey collected her second single of the frame and fifth consecutive base knock to bring home Simon and pull within a run at 7-6.
- Wichita State would pull a run back in the seventh for the final score of 8-6.
HOW IT HAPPENED VS. NORTHWESTERN STATE
- North Texas loaded the bases with a walk and consecutive singles in the bottom of the second inning but were not able to score.
- Gamble pushed across the first run of the game with a solo home run in the third inning for a 1-0 UNT lead.
- Cobb recorded her fifth RBI of the season on a double, scoring Kalei Christensen after her leadoff single in the fourth for a 2-0 edge.
- Emma Grahmann entered the game as a pinch runner after a single by Gamble. She collected her first stolen base of the season to move into scoring position with one out in the fifth inning.
- Christensen then hit a double off the first base bag to score Grahmann for a 3-0 lead.
- Smith hit a two-run home run into the trees beyond the right field wall to lift the Mean Green to a 5-0 advantage.
- Savage cruised through six innings of work, retiring the side in order in the second, fourth and fifth innings.
- Cobb opened the sixth with a single which was followed by walks from Rainey and Gamble to load the bases but none of the runners were able to cross the plate.
- Northwestern State rallied for three runs in the top of the seventh but fell to the Mean Green 5-3.
NOTES
- Smith tied her single-season career high with her fourth home run of the season on Saturday.
- Freshman Mikaela Olguin scored the first run of her collegiate career on the fifth inning two-run home run by Smith against Northwestern State.
- The loss to Wichita State marks the first defeat in which a North Texas player hit a home run of the season. Including both of today's results, the Mean Green are now 9-1 in such games.
