
Lama Earns 300th Career Win in Doubleheader Sweep of Arkansas St. & Central Oklahoma

UNT earns fifth straight win, longest win streak since 2019-20
DENTON, Texas (Feb. 4, 2023) – UNT women's tennis head coach Sujay Lama reached a career milestone as he reached 300 career victories after leading the Mean Green to a pair of wins Saturday over Arkansas State and Central Oklahoma at the Waranch Tennis Complex.
The Mean Green started the day with a 6-1 win over ASU and followed it up with a 7-0 sweep of UCO to improve to 7-1 on the year and push their winning streak to five straight matches.
The five-match win streak is the longest since the 2019-20 season for UNT.
Already the winningest coach in UNT women's tennis history, Lama now has 191 wins at UNT and 300 in total in his career.
"My heart is filled with gratitude for the opportunity to be able to do what I love to do with so many amazing student athletes, coaches and support staff over the years," Lama said of his milestone "I love the process and journey of coming together as one family. The wins have been just the icing on the cake."
UNT started the day with a 6-1 win over ASU, kicking off the matchup with a double point win.
At line two doubles, Olivia Malm and Nformi Stadfany picked up a 6-2 win while Marina Adati and Olivia Halvorsen grabbed a 6-4 victory to give UNT the doubles point.
In singles play, Malm was the first Mean Green player to earn a win at line three with a 6-1, 6-1 sweep.
Just moments later, Matilde Morais kept her perfect singles record intact with a perfect performance, winning 6-0, 6-0 at line two.
Playing on line one, Jasmine Adams found herself in a battle in the opening set but was able to pull out a strong 7-5 victory in the first set and went on to take the second 6-2 to earn the win and give UNT the overall team win, putting them up 4-0.
Olivia Halvorsen played in a back-and-forth match at line four, winning the first set 6-3 before dropping set two 6-1. In the decisive third set, Halvorsen dug deep and grabbed a dominant 6-1 win to give UNT another point and make it 5-0.
At line five, Zhou gave the Mean Green their sixth and final point with a 6-2, 7-5 victory as the Mean Green secured the 6-1 team win.
In the second match of the day against UCO, the Mean Green took home the doubles point with a pair of wins at lines one and three.
Adams and Morais teamed up for a 6-1 win at line one while Zhou and Adati picked up a 6-4 victory at line three to give UNT a 1-0 lead.
Adams and Morais continued their strong play into singles as they both earned straight set wins at lines one and two. Adams won 6-0, 6-2 while Morais grabbed a 6-1, 6-1 victory to put UNT up 3-0.
Moments later, Malm clinched the team win with another dominant effort at line three with a 6-1, 6-0 victory. In four total sets played on the day, the sophomore transfer from Baylor dropped only one point to improve her overall singles record to 6-1 this season.
Zhou was the next UNT player to clinch a win, also winning in straight sets 6-0, 6-4. The senior out of Changsha, China, also kept her perfect singles record intact and is now 6-0 overall on the year.
At both lines five and six, the Mean Green had a pair of players earn their first singles wins of their collegiate careers in Stadfany and Adati.
Stadfany was the first UNT player to clinch the win, grabbing a hard-fought 6-4, 7-6 (8-6) victory at line five.
Adati, meanwhile, split the first two sets 5-7, 6-2 to force a decisive 10-point match tiebreaker in the third. The freshman was able to come through down the stretch, winning the tiebreak 10-8 to earn the team sweep 7-0.
It is the second 7-0 sweep of the season for UNT. It is the first time since the 2019-20 season that the Mean Green have earned a perfect 7-0 win twice in the same season.
