ELKHART, Ind. -Â The UNT swimming and diving team finished out its season on Saturday at the three-day CSCAA National Invitational Championship - an invitational meet of student-athletes who met qualifying standards just shy of the NCAA Championship standard.
The Mean Green were well-represented and there were a handful of standout performances in the highly competitive meet.
Head coach Brittany Roth praised the UNT contingent at the meet for routinely finishing ahead of the pre-meet seeding and staying very close to their qualifying times from the conference championship meet, led by a pair of Mean Green student-athletes who scored individual points in the meet against some of the top teams in the country.
Sophomore Emily Ally finished 20th in the 50 backstroke in a personal-best time of 25.87 to notch a point for the Mean Green. Senior diver Brigid Krbec's tied for 17th in the 3-meter springboard event, from which scores were taken from NCAA Zone meet performances. Krbec's total of 240.20 scored her 3.5 points for the team.
Two relays also scored for the Mean Green, led by the 400 freestyle relay, comprised of Noelle Marsh, London Farris, Cierra Scully and Shaena McCloud, which notched a 24th-place finish in 3:24.64 for 17 points. The 200 freestyle relay team of McCloud, Marsh, Farris and Scully, finished 26th in 1:34.36 to earn 15 points for the team.
Sophomore Laura Mazzotta also dropped her time in 50 breaststoke, a rarity at the NIC, by swimming a 29.79 to clip a tenth of a second off her qualifying time.
The theme of the meet for the team was also finishing ahead of their projected seed. Junior Diana Kolb finished 11 spots ahead of her pre-meet seeding in the 50 backstroke, 10 ahead in the 100 backstroke and 13 ahead in the 200 backstroke. McCloud finished 10 spots ahead of her seed in the 100 butterfly and 17 ahead in the 100 freestyle. Farris was 31 spots ahead of her seed in the 200 freestyle and 20 ahead in the 100 freestyle. Mazzotta was 10 spots ahead of her seed in the 50 breaststroke.
"We had a really great showing this week at the NIC," Roth said. "I'm really proud of our team this year from start to finish. Taking on The American, and then turning around and going up against some of the top programs in the nation at the NIC with energy, excitement, and grit stems from the core of this team. Event after event, our Mean Green swimmers nearly matched their performances from the American and put us in position to move up significantly in the event rankings. Our athletes should be proud of the work they have put in this season, and the way they represented UNT on the national stage."
