DENTON – The UNT men's basketball team begins its National Invitation Tournament run Wednesday night as they host Alcorn State in the first round of the 32-team tournament.
North Texas (26-7), which is a No. 2 seed in this year's NIT, and Alcorn State (18-13) are scheduled to tipoff from the Super Pit at 7 p.m. CT. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+, the Mean Green Sports Network presented by Learfield and The Varsity Network.
This is the second consecutive year the Mean Green have played in the NIT. Prior to this two-year run UNT had never been to the tournament. It's also the third year in a row North Texas has played in a NCAA national postseason tournament. Last season in the NIT, UNT defeated then Sun Belt regular season champion Texas State in the first round, 67-63 (OT) to advance to the second round where they hosted recent NCAA national champion Virginia and narrowly fell 71-69 (OT).
This is the first time in program history North Texas has reached three straight national postseason tournaments. They have made four in head coach Grant McCasland's six seasons in Denton. There were no national postseasons in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
UNT has won a program record 26 overall games this season. They won a program record 25 regular season games this year and tied the program record for league wins with 16. This is the second consecutive year North Texas has set the program record for wins.
Senior Tylor Perry was named the Conference USA Player of the Year after this season and Kai Huntsberry (newcomer of the year), Abou Ousmane (third team all-conference) and Rubin Jones (all-defensive team) also earned all-conference honors this season.
Under McCasland's leadership the Mean Green have a 5-1 record in postseason home games with the only loss being the overtime loss to Virginia in the NIT second round last year.
If UNT defeats Alcorn State on Wednesday they will face the winner of Sam Houston and Santa Clara in the second round of the NIT. Home games in subsequent rounds exist dependent on results of other games and facility availability. A date and time for the second round game will be determined following the result of Wednesday's results.
Tickets to Wednesday's game for the general public are available for purchase now by clicking here. Tickets start at $15 for upper general admission seating and lower bowl seating will be only $20.
