Softball Shuts Out Cyclones Before Falling to Islanders

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – McKenzie Wagoner spun a complete game shutout in a 3-0 win over Iowa State before UNT dropped the second game 3-2 to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Saturday.
Wagoner is the first North Texas pitcher to record a seven-inning shutout this season, her second complete game shutout this season. She finished with seven strikeouts while allowing two hits and one walk. Teammate Skylar Savage was the last pitcher to accomplish a seven-inning shutout on May 21, 2022, in a 3-0 win over No. 25 Nebraska at the NCAA Regionals.
Kailey Gamble hit two home runs in the doubleheader to bring her season total to 10. She is the fastest player to reach 10 home runs in a season, doing so in 19 games. Gamble passes Kelli Schkade (2016) and Taylor Schoblocher (2015), who both accomplished the feat in 26 games.
Ashley Peters suffered the loss against the Islanders despite giving up one earned run on three hits over 5.0 innings with three strikeouts.

HOW IT HAPPENED VS. IOWA STATE
- Jodie Epperson led off for the first time this season and collected a career high three walks along with one run scored.
- Gamble gave the Mean Green a 2-0 lead with a first-inning home run over the right field wall. The blast was the first home run she has hit in the first inning this season.
- North Texas collected eight baserunners in the initial three innings including five walks, three hits and a hit by pitch but were limited to two runs.
- Wagoner retired 13 consecutive hitters from the third to seventh innings. She sat down the side, in order, in the fourth, fifth and sixth to hold the 2-0 edge for UNT.
- Cierra Simon tallied a leadoff walk in the sixth inning and later advanced to second with her fifth stolen base of the season. She would come in to score the final run of the day on a groundout from second base.
HOW IT HAPPENED VS. TEXAS A&M-CORPUS CHRISTI
- Epperson tallied her team high sixth double of the season to lead off the game.
- Gamble launched her second home run of the day to bring in Epperson for a 2-0 North Texas lead.
- Texas A&M-CC pushed three runs in to take a 3-2 lead in the fourth inning.
- UNT accumulated five baserunners in the subsequent innings but were unable to score.
- The Mean Green moved to 10-2 on the season when out hitting its opponent.
NOTES
- Gamble is currently second in the nation with 10 home runs, one behind Jordyn VanHook at Arizona State.
