DENTON – McKenzie Wagoner recorded her third complete-game shutout in a 4-0 win for UNT softball against UAB in game one of a doubleheader before dropping the second game 6-3 at Lovelace Stadium on Saturday.
"We played hard overall," head coach Rodney DeLong said. "We can't ask for more than that. The ball isn't bouncing our way right now but maybe it will balance out at some point."
Wagoner (W, 8-4) finished the opening contest with 7.0 innings pitched, three strikeouts while allowing no runs on five hits and three walks. She also spun the final 1.2 shutout innings of game two with one strikeout and allowed two hits and one walk.
North Texas (20-16, 6-6) snapped its season-long, six-game losing streak with multi-hit efforts from Cierra Simon (2-for-3) and Lexi Cobb (2-for-4). UAB (19-17, 7-5) took the series despite trailing the Mean Green 19-14 in hits in the three-game set.
Simon was 3-for-4 with two runs, two stolen bases and an RBI double for the day. Cobb finished 3-for-8 with two runs, one RBI and a double.
Ashley Peters (L, 6-7) was credited with the game two loss after she recorded 3.1 innings with two strikeouts. She allowed three earned runs on two hits and four walks.
Kailey Gamble posted a 3-for-4 line including an RBI single in the fifth inning of the second game. She extended her reached base streak to a team-high mark of 13 games.
