DALLAS - UNT junior Vicente Marzilio fired a final-round 6-under 66 to finish sixth at the El Macero Classic in California over the weekend and led the Mean Green to a second-place finish after they ended Day 1 in 12th place before making five-spot jumps up the leaderboard on each of the final two days.
The performance earned him a nod for Conference USA Golfer of the Week, presented by Blenders Eyewear, the league announced on Wednesday. It's the second Golfer of the Week award for Marzilio this season and the fourth of his career.
Marzilio opened the event with a 72-71 in the first two rounds before tying his career-low round in the third and final round to finish the event at 7-under par and beat two top-100 players, including the country's 15th-ranked player. The Mean Green beat two top-50 teams in No. 46 San Francisco and No. 50 Cal. Marzilio tied for second in the field in total birdies with 15, including six in his bogey-free final round. The performance dropped his season stroke average to 72.07, which leads the team and it was his fourth top-15 showing of the season.
The Mean Green now prepare for next week's C-USA Championship, which will run from April 24-27, in Texarkana, Arkansas.
