Softball Sweeps at UTEP

EL PASO, Texas – Kailey Gamble hit her 14th home run of the season as UNT softball defeated UTEP 7-3 on Saturday at Helen of Troy Field. She reached the mark faster than any player in program history, doing so 40 games into the campaign.
"We went into the weekend needing a sweep and got the job done," head coach Rodney DeLong said. "Ashley [Peters] and McKenzie [Wagoner] threw really well. We also had some big performances at the plate from Wagoner, Mikayla [Smith], Cierra [Simon] and [Kailey] Gamble. The lineup was much more balanced this weekend."
The Mean Green (24-16, 9-6) completed its fourth consecutive sweep of the Miners in its final regular season C-USA series between the two programs. DeLong finished the series with an undefeated record against UTEP (10-22, 2-10) over 13 games.
"It was a good week for us moving into the Charlotte series," DeLong said. "We are going to rest up for Easter and then get back to work."
Gamble tallied the first runs of the game with a two-RBI double in the first inning and added a two-run home run in the third. She matched her career high with four RBI in the game. Gamble moved into a tie for third place on the UNT career home run list with 33 total.
Ashley Peters (W, 8-7) collected the victory from the bullpen after she spun 5.2 innings with five strikeouts. She allowed two earned runs on five hits and one walk. Peters followed starter Skylar Savage (ND) after she threw 1.1 innings and allowed one earned run on three hits and three walks.
Smith hit her second home run of the weekend with a solo blast over the left field wall in the fourth inning.
Kalei Christensen added a multi-hit effort with a 2-for-3 day at the plate with two runs scored including an RBI double in the seventh inning.
Tatum Sparks added a double to her impressive weekend in which she finished 4-for-8 with three RBI, three runs and her first career stolen base.
