Winningest coach in school history
DENTON, Texas – Long time head coach Sujay Lama will not return as coach at UNT, leaving the school to pursue other opportunities, Vice President and Director of Athletics Jared Mosley announced Wednesday.
"We are grateful for Coach Lama's contributions to our women's tennis program and wish he and his family all the best moving forward," Mosley said. "In his 17 years, he and his teams always represented UNT with class. We look forward to finding the next coach that will guide our program to the next level."
Lama recently completed his 17th season leading the Mean Green tennis program. He won 195 dual matches at UNT and has 304 victories overall in his head coaching career. UNT posted an 11-12 record in 2023 and reached an ITA ranking of No. 69 in March.
"I've had the best years of my coaching career here at the University of North Texas," Lama said. "If I had to choose just one word to describe my seventeen years as the head of UNT Tennis, it's gratitude. I am grateful for the opportunity to lead this program, the people and the alumni, the players and coaches I've led, and the relationships I've built."
Competing in both the Sun Belt Conference and Conference USA, Lama mentored 21 student-athletes to 38 all-conference honors and guided his teams to league semifinals or finals 10 times. He led North Texas to Sun Belt titles and NCAA Tournament berths in 2010, 2012 and 2013.
"With hope and excitement, I embrace God's greater plan for me after my time at UNT," Lama said. "I would like to take this opportunity to thank Rick Villarreal, Wren Baker, Jared Mosley, and a very special thank you to coach Rodrigo de Almeida who has been by my side these last four years pouring his heart and soul to help build an amazing team culture. As always, I wish the fantastic incoming class a wonderful academic and athletic experience at the University of North Texas."
A national search for his replacement will begin immediately.
