Martinez Named Mean Green Strength Coach

DENTON — The reigning National Invitational Tournament champion UNT men's basketball team and head coach Ross Hodge on Wednesday announced the hiring of strength and conditioning coach Jason Martinez to its staff.
The New York native comes to North Texas after helping lead the Iona Gales to a 27-win season last year, the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference regular season and tournament championship, which earned them an automatic bid into the 2023 NCAA Tournament.
While at Iona, Martinez worked with Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame coach Rick Pitino. He helped guide Walter Clayton Jr. to being named the 2023 MAAC Player of the Year and Berrick JeanLouis to the 2023 MAAC Defensive Player of the Year honor.
Martinez joins a North Texas program that will be making the move to the American Athletic Conference next season after 10 seasons in Conference USA where they won three league titles since 2020. The American Athletic Conference won't be new to Martinez as he previously was the strength and conditioning coach for the East Carolina men's basketball program for two seasons.
Martinez has also previously worked at Wake Forrest with the men's basketball program as well as Lindenwood where he earned his master's degree from in 2019. The Saratoga Springs, New York, native earned his bachelor's degree in exercise science in 2017 from Manhattan College. In addition to his role with the UNT men's basketball program, Martinez will also be the lead Mean Green volleyball strength and conditioning coach.
UNT season tickets for the 2023-24 Mean Green men and women's basketball teams are available now at www.meangreentickets.com. Tickets start as low as $99 for men's and $75 for women's basketball. The Mean Green won a program-record 31 games last season to go along with tying the program-record for conference wins (16). UNT earned a bid into the 2023 NIT where they defeated Alcorn State, Sam Houston, Oklahoma State, Wisconsin and UAB in route to its first NIT championship in program history.
The Mean Green, who have now won a championship trophy in each of the last four seasons, elevated then associate head coach Ross Hodge to head coach on April 2.
