Bleed Green Open 2023 TBT Wednesday
7/19/2023 7:49:00 AM | Men's Basketball
Lubbock, Texas — The North Texas men's basketball alumni TBT team, Bleed Green, opens the 2023 tournament on Wednesday with a first-round matchup against Rise And Grind at 1 p.m. CT from the United Supermarket Arena in Lubbock, Texas.
The contest will be broadcast on ESPN+.
The TBT is a 64-team single-elimination tournament with a winner-take-all prize of $1 million. The tournament, which was founded in 2014, has every game broadcast on ESPN Networks. The tournament starts in eight different regions across the country hosted typically by different universities. The quarterfinal, semifinal and final rounds are hosted at a central location. This year, the final three rounds are held at Drexel's Daskalakis Athletic Center in Philadelphia.
Last year, Bleed Green in its inaugural season advanced all the way to the Wichita Region final (Round of 16) as a No. 7 seed and nearly upset regional host AfterShock — Wichita State's alumni team.
This year, Bleed Green earned an automatic bid into the tournament and find themselves in the Lubbock regional hosted by Texas Tech. Bleed Green return many players from last year's team. Recent UNT alums who will be playing include Kai Huntsberry (2023), Thomas Bell (2022), James Reese (2021) and Zachary Simmons (2021).
Bleed Green is coached by current Mean Green assistant coach Andre Shaw and the team's general managers are UNT men's basketball alums JJ Murray DJ Draper.
Their first-round opponent Rise and Grind is a team made up of DII, DIII and NAIA alums. It is their first year in the TBT.
The winner of Wednesday's game will play its second-round game on Friday at 6 p.m. CT from Lubbock, Texas.
