DENTON — The UNT soccer team scored a single-match season high on Thursday in a 6-0 victory over Rice at the Mean Green Soccer and Track & Field Stadium.
Thursday night's win serves as the Mean Green's largest margin of victory in the history of the series. Thursday was the 19th all-time meeting between the two schools.
The win also represents the first conference victory in the American Athletic Conference for North Texas, who moved into the league this year.
"The second half was a better reflection of how we played as a team," said junior Bailey Wesco. "The first half was a little shaky, but we came together well in the second half."
North Texas (7-2, 1-1) opened the scoring in the 27th minute when Wesco blasted a shot into the top left corner off a Summer Brown pass. The goal brings Wesco's tally to four goals on the season and gives Brown her third assist to go along with a team-high six goals.
Coming out of the half, UNT started quickly with a goal in the 50th minute with a first-time volley from senior Devyn Flannery off a cross from Madi Starrett.
Wesco then made a run into the box and got fouled in the 69th minute, leading to a penalty for UNT. Senior Jenna Sheely stepped up and converted to make the score 3-0. It was Sheely's sixth goal of the year, tying Brown for the team lead.
After the restart, UNT got the ball immediately and capitalize on a Rice (2-8-1, 0-2) mistake, leading to a goal for Mia Bernard in the 70th minute. The goal marks the first collegiate goal for the freshman midfielder.
UNT then scored just a few minutes later in the 77th minute, off a free kick at midfield from Maddie Ogden that found Flannery in the box. Flannery's second goal of the night marks a brace for her and brings her season total up to four goals.
She is the first North Texas player this season to score multiple goals in a single match.
"This game was a much-needed bounce back from our loss at Memphis," Flannery said. "We went into this game really focused on getting the three points and making sure that we got the win at home."
Freshman Alexis Miller conclude the scoring in the 88th minute off an assist from Megan Brouse into an empty net. Miller's goal serves as the sixth goal of the game and the first of her career.
Next up for the Mean Green is a road match at reigning Conference USA champion UTSA on September 28. The match is scheduled to kickoff at 7 p.m. CT from San Antonio, Texas.
