SAN ANTONIO — Fresh off its sixth largest conference victory in program history, the UNT soccer team that is receiving top 25 votes heads to UTSA Thursday to face a familiar foe.
The Mean Green (7-2-0, 1-1-0) and Roadrunners (5-4-2, 0-1-1) are scheduled to kickoff Thursday at 7 p.m. CT from the Park West Soccer Complex in San Antonio. The match will be streamed on ESPN+.
North Texas is coming off a 6-0 victory over Rice last week. The six-goal win was UNT's largest margin of victory of the year and ever over the Owls in 19 all-time meetings. Additionally, it was the sixth largest league win in the program's 29-year history. On Monday the Mean Green moved up to No. 30 in the NCAA's RPI ranking and on Tuesday earned two top 25 votes in the United Soccer Coaches Poll.
The Mean Green are the second-highest ranked American Athletic Conference team and second-highest ranked team in the state of Texas.
Thursday they'll face a dangerous UTSA side who reached the NCAA Tournament a season ago. The Roadrunners will be playing their second straight home match when they meet North Texas. UTSA fell 1-0 at home to No. 9 Memphis last week.
Last year during the regular season, UNT defeated the Roadrunners 3-1 at home when both the teams were in Conference USA.
Despite Thursday being the 13th all-time meeting between the two schools — UNT leads the all-time series 7-5-0 — Mean Green seniors Jenna Sheely and Victoria Altieri are the only active players to have played at UTSA's home field. Sophomore Kat Burnell is the only active Mean Green player to have scored against the Roadrunners.
North Texas is 2-2-0 all-time at UTSA and last won in San Antonio in 2019, 1-0.
Following Thursday's match, UNT returns home to host Tulsa on Oct. 5 at 7 p.m. CT. The match will be the Mean Green's breast cancer awareness game.
