SAN ANTONIO — The UNT soccer team shutout its second straight league opponent Thursday night as they defeated UTSA 2-0 on the road.
The Mean Green (8-2-0, 2-1-0) scored both goals in the first half. The first was came in the 13th minute from sophomore Summer Brown. It was her team-leading seventh goal of the year. She is just the fourth North Texas sophomore or younger to score seven or more goals in a year since 2010.
The second goal was a dramatic goal from goalkeeper Maddie Ogden right before the half. The Roadrunners (5-5-2, 0-2-1) committed a foul near midfield as the final seconds of the first half wound down. Ogden, who has a cannon for a leg, ran up and took the free kick. The senior soared it perfectly into the top left corner where the UTSA keeper couldn't stop it. It's her first career goal and comes one match after her first career assist.
"It was exciting to get my first career goal, especially on a long ball since I've spent so much time over the years practicing my accuracy," Ogden said. "Even better was to get the shutout and the three points on the road in the AAC. I knew we could hold it down in the second half after all the excitement in the first and finish off the game the right way."
North Texas has now shutout seven of its 10 opponents so far. They've won every match that they've scored first in.
Head coach John Hedlund picked up his 393rd career win and UNT improves to 8-5-0 all-time versus UTSA.
"I'm proud of my team tonight, not just the players but my staff as well," Hedlund said. "It was a total team effort to come in here and get a tough road win against a very hardworking UTSA team."
The Mean Green return home next and host Tulsa on Thursday at 7 p.m. CT at the Mean Green Soccer Field. The match will be streamed on ESPN+.
