DENTON — The (RV) UNT soccer team drew 2-2 with Tulsa Thursday night at the Mean Green Soccer Complex.
Junior Bailey Wesco scored both Mean Green goals, each time bringing North Texas back from a one goal deficit. Additionally, she should have given her team the advantage in the 21st minute but was taken down in the box and despite the obviousness of it, no penalty kick was awarded to the Mean Green.
"The result isn't what we wanted," Wesco said. "But obviously we rather take the tie than the loss. I'm proud of how our team fought after falling behind early."
Tulsa (3-6-4, 1-0-3), despite having only three wins on the year, has not lost a match in over a month and showed their offensive skill on Thursday as they jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the 7th minute. It marked the first time this season the Mean Green (8-2-1, 2-1-1) trailed at home all year.
The deficit didn't last long, however, as Wesco scored five minutes later off an assist from Devyn Flannery.
The junior from Midlothian continued to put pressure on the Golden Hurricanes backline as she made runs and attempted a match-high seven shots in 73 minutes played. Wesco took one-third of all the Mean Green shots on Thursday.
Roughly 10 minutes following the no call in the box, Tulsa took the lead again with a goal in the 37th minute and led 2-1 at the half.
It marked the first time in conference this year UNT trailed at the half.
In the second half the Mean Green changed their formation and immediately reaped the benefits of Wesco's aggression. In the 51st minute she fired a shot that the Golden Hurricanes' keeper saved but didn't corral. Wesco regained the ball off the rebound and finished her next shot in the back of the net for her sixth goal of the season. She is now tied with Jenna Sheely for the second-most goals on the team.
In the final 30 minutes North Texas took seven shots but couldn't score the go-ahead goal.
"Tulsa is a solid team," Wesco said. "They have a lot of talented players and really made us work. We'll take the result and get better."
With the draw, UNT shares a point with Tulsa who remains one point behind the second-place Mean Green in the American Athletic Conference West Division standings. But due to the draw and SMU defeating UTSA on Thursday, the Mean Green are now tied with the Mustangs in second place. Both UNT and SMU trail No. 10 Memphis by five points for first place.
Next up for North Texas is a two-match road trip to Florida where they will play at South Florida on Oct. 12 and at Florida Atlantic on Oct. 15.
