EDMOND, Okla. - The UNT swim team kicked off its season on Saturday afternoon at the Sam Freas Invite, hosted by Oklahoma Christian, and came home with several strong showings.
UNT won all but two events and had several swimmers who won multiple races.
Junior Shaena McCloud won the 50 freestyle, 100 butterfly and swam the anchor leg on the 200 medley relay that took first in 1:47.53. Senior Diana Kolb swam the opening leg on that 200 medley relay team and also won the 100 backstroke. Senior Tram Nguyen was on the 200 medley relay team and also won the 100 IM and the 200 butterfly, and junior Kailey Turner won the 200 and 500 freestyle events.
"The swimmers had a great first meet of the season at the Sam Freas Invite, honoring the late Sam Freas," UNT head coach Brittany Roth said. "We had strong performances from our returning National Team members, specifically Shaena McCloud, Diana Kolb, Tram Nguyen and Kailey Turner. Paula Núñez Blázquez, Sadie Goldin, and Joy Graziano looked great in their first outing for the Mean Green, and Hollie Smith had a great meet, showing her versatility and early speed. I'm excited to build on this meet's results, and look forward to competing as a whole team at Incarnate Word in a couple of weeks."
The Mean Green will travel to UIW on Oct. 6, as the divers will make their season debut.
